I always listened to the heartbeat before I went to bed, that's when my baby seems most active and it was soothing to me to have that be the last thing that I think of before falling asleep. Sometimes the baby will be tucked away towards your back. Don't get yourself frustrated over it, try for a few minutes, then put it away and try later.
