Can anyone tell me if the fetal doppler monitors you rent can pick up my babys heartbeat when Im 13 weeks?

CountryGirl asked:

I also want to know if you rented one which was the best and was it worth it? I think I would feel alot better after a miscarriage if I could hear the heartbeat often.

Heart Rate Monitors

Thursday, January 29th, 2009
Jill Smi asked:

Heart rate monitors used to be exclusively operated by physicians and nurses alone but that was soon rectified with today’s multi-tasking generation. Every person seemed to want to know about everything that was related to them and that of course included monitoring their own heartbeats.

What is a Heart Monitor

Also known as a cardiac monitor, a heart monitor is a piece of electronic equipment that can be used to track or observe heart functions continuously. It allows people to place a numerical value on their healthiness based on their heart rate and have a target heart rate to work for. The more complex versions of the heart monitor allow physicians to see any signs of deterioration or improvement and make the necessary adjustments immediately.

Types of Heart Monitors

Today, heart monitors are produced by the millions and designed to cater specific types of individuals. Some heart monitors are primarily designed for weight loss programs while others are meant for the use of athletes or fitness programs. Some are wireless or come as a built-in feature of exercise equipment like a treadmill or an exercise bike. It can be strapped to your wrist or of considerable size. It may or may not emit any electromagnetic waves, depending on its purpose. A fetal heart monitor, for instance, must not produce any waves at all as this may affect the health of the baby.

Factors on Selecting the Best Heart Monitor for You

ECG-Accurate Monitors with Chest Straps - Heart monitors that come with chest straps are more often not the most accurate of heart monitors. The chest strap is strapped around your chest, a few centimeters below your breast. It contains a device that’s able to detect electrical activity of your heart and transmit it to the brain of the machine - just like an ECG. The results are shown on the display monitor, which most of the times is attached to your wrist like a watch. Others however prefer results to be transmitted through audio messages via earphones.

Upon choosing heart monitors with chest straps, you need to remember to keep the strap constantly connected to your body lest you want the heart monitor to produce inaccurate readings.

Lastly, the only alternative against buying heart monitors with chest straps are the ones that rely on pulses on your fingertips. These however do not provide readings as accurate as those with chest straps.

Heart Monitor Features - Basic and lower end models tend to display only your heart rate and maybe the elapsed exercise time as well. This of course does not provide sufficient information if you want to know exactly how much you need to improve before you can be qualified as a completely healthy individual. Higher end models will naturally offer a wider range of features - for a price. Examples of such features are - but not limited to - heart rate zone alarms, timers and number of calories burned. It may also allow users to set pre-programmed workouts along with a targeted heart rate.

Ease of Use - Lastly, you must purchase a heart rate monitor that you will have no problems of using. What good would a high end heart monitor do if it takes you an hour to operate it? Are the numbers and words appearing in the heart rate monitor readable? Can it be used in no-light situations? Are buttons well-labeled and ergonomically positioned?

To Buy or Not to Buy a Heart Monitor

Heart monitors can be especially costly, more so if you are intent on purchasing higher-end models. If you have a limited budget, you should ask yourself whether or not you truly need to buy a heart monitor. You can of course purchase one of the lower-end models but low quality heart monitors can lead to inaccurate results and that sort of defeats the purpose of buying one.

If you are intent on purchasing a heart monitor, you need to ask yourself another question: do you need to make a solo purchase or is it alright with you to use the heart monitor that comes as a built-in feature of a treadmill? Lastly, you should remember as well that you can always pay your doctor regular visits and have him monitor your heart rate for you.

34w 5d.lack of fetal movement?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
♥jen♥ asked:

I am 34weeks and 5 days pregnant with #1. I know he is a BIG boy and running out of room and all the little kicks and jabs are now going to be wiggles and rolls..BUT I haven’t felt him move all morning. I ate breakfast and usually after that he is active for a little while…but this morning, nothing. I saw my doctor just 2 days ago and don’t want to be the woman who calls him for everything but what can I do? Should I go to L&D and hook up to a fetal monitor for a while? Or what? Any advice would help! Thanks!

being induced next week. worried about internal fetal heart monitor?

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009
xlinzx88x asked:

I’m scheduled to be induced for labor next Friday. I was reading through some of the forms and found that the doctor wants me to have an internal fetal heart monitor. I’m thinking about whether or not I want to allow this to happen as I’ve heard that the risk for infection is higher. I also don’t want the baby to get hurt. How did some of you mothers feel about this and did you actually go through it? Also, I’m having a non stress test on Tuesday, I haven’t had any contractions, so how are they going to monitor them?
I’m being induced because I’m overdue. The doctor said he doesn’t want me going past 41 1/2 weeks. I pretty much have a week to go into labor on my own, if not, I have to get induced. I’m 2cm dilated but I haven’t had any contractions as of yet. They’re going to use pitocin to induce me and the only pain medication I’ll have is nubain.

Medical Equipment for Physicians

Sunday, January 25th, 2009
Groshan Fabiola asked:

Establishing a medical practice is exorbitantly expensive. After the lease on the office space has been signed, the medical provider has to furnish the entire space and have available all the medical supplies needed to run a successful practice. Locating a reliable medical supply company, which can provide the essentials at a discount, is an advantage.

When setting up operations there are many facts to consider for ordering medical equipment. Obviously different practices require different kinds of medical devices. Nevertheless, most medical offices will need examination room furniture such as tables, cabinets, exam lights, stools, trays, and sundry jars. Doctors will need the indispensable monitoring devices like blood pressure machines and cups, stethoscopes, pulseoximeters, audiometers, and spirometers with nose clips for tests, and thermometers. Additionally there are diagnostic station modules to monitor vital signs to be ordered. Doctors will need to order EKG and ECG machines, and the crucial accessories that go with this vital testing tools; there are many to choose from. There are basic back room items to keep the practice clean like the Tuttnauer 9″ fully automatic autoclave for sterilizing instruments along with the requisite charts and tray accessories and the Tuttnauer 7000 series large capacity water distiller. As fundamental as all this equipment is, there is much more to fill out the indispensable devices required to supply a medical practice office.

Doctors specializing in pediatrics will need child size monitoring equipment. Ob/Gyn practices will need fetal monitors and other practice specific devices. Every podiatry office needs the special examination chair/tables. Radiology, surgery, and emergency medicine have extremely specialized needs. For heart specialist, the Welch Allyn Holter system with accompanying software is easy to use by physicians and patients and provides fast accurate data.

A one -top supplier for all of these items is an indispensable resource. When deciding on an online supplier, find one that offers experienced customer service and guidance for your needs, along with a 24 hour toll-free contact phone number. Look for the best prices at deep discounts; suppliers need to match or beat any price elsewhere. Make sure they take major credit cards, have financing available, and secure and private sites. Most importantly, long term warranties are a must.

This online resource will prove invaluable throughout your practice. One such source is Medical Device Depot Inc. Explore their site for everything a physician or healthcare professional medical practice could need.

How often do you use your fetal heart monitor?

Sunday, January 25th, 2009
☆Lindsey & Jackson☆ asked:

I just recently got a fetal heart monitor (about 4 days ago) I found that I am becoming obsessed with listening to my baby’s heart beat. I listen to it at least twice a day. Is this normal? Ha ha…I’m 6 months, but I worry about him a lot and I want to make sure he is ok.
I listen to it to check what his heart rate is per minute and to make sure he isn’t under any stress. I am a diabetic, so it scares me and that’s why I tend to use it alot.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Saturday, January 24th, 2009
Juliet Cohen asked:

Fetal Alcohol syndrom is an invisible avalanche crashing down and overwhelming public resources. Patients with fetal alcohol syndrome typically have multiple handicaps and require special medical, educational, familial and community assistance. A baby born with FAS may be seriously handicapped and require a lifetime of special care. In the United States, about 1,200 children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome. It is the leading cause of mental retardation in this country. When a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, she risks giving birth to a child who will pay the price- in mental and physical deficiencies- for his or her entire life. It is a pattern of mental and physical defects which develops in some unborn babies when the mother drinks too much alcohol during pregnancy. People with FAS might have problems with learning, memory, attention span, communication, vision, hearing, or a combination of these. These problems often lead to difficulties in school and problems getting along with others.

Fetal alcohol syndrome includes a characteristic group of defects including small head and brain, facial abnormalities, and defects of other organs. Alcohol is capable of causing birth defects. Causing a child to suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome is really nothing short of child abuse and it lasts for life. Babies born with FAS tend to weigh less and be shorter than normal. This capability classifies it medically as a teratogen. Alcohol is now recognized as the leading teratogen to which the fetus is likely to be exposed. The syndrome is found in all racial and socio-economic groups. If you suspect that your child has FAS, talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Early diagnosis reduces the risk of problems in life associated with FAS, including troubles at school, with substance abuse and with the law. There is no cure for FAS; however, with early identification and diagnosis, children with FAS can receive services that can help increase their potential.

Causes of Fetal alcohol syndrome

The common causes of Fetal alcohol syndrome include the following:

Use of alcohol during the pregnancy.

Many drugs.

Heart defects such as ventricular septal defect or atrial septal defect.

Women older than 30 years and/or those with a long history of alcohol consumption.

Symptoms of of Fetal alcohol syndrome

Some sign and symptoms related to of Fetal alcohol syndrome are as follows:

Poor socialization skills, such as difficulty building and maintaining friendships and relating to groups.

Poor coordination/fine motor skills.

Small head circumference.

Failure to thrive.

Growth, motor, and mental retardation.

Mental retardation and delayed development.

Slow physical growth before and after birth.

Incomplete development of genitalia.

Facial abnormalities, skeletal limb abnormalities, tremors (in the newborn infant), agitation and crying (in the newborn infant).

Treatment of Fetal alcohol syndrome

Here is list of the methods for treating Fetal alcohol syndrome:

Babies and children with alcohol-related damage often need developmental follow-up and, possibly, long-term treatment and care.

Pregnant alcoholic women should be involved in alcohol abuse rehabilitation programs and monitored closely throughout pregnancy.

If you’re an alcoholic, don’t get pregnant until you get help. Use birth control methods until you’re able to control your drinking.

Heart abnormalities may require surgery.

A child with FAS may need help with social skills and memory.
