Monday, January 25th, 2010

I bought a graco heartbeat monitor and it actually works pretty good considering that I only paid $19.99 for it. I googled if it was safe to use and I didn’t see any studies or suggestions on it. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance.

How good are these? fetal monitors?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010
Christian’s Mommy & an Angel asked:

Has anyone had any good experience with those fetal heart monitors? We were thinking of getting one because my son wants to hear the heart beat and it’s not so easy to take him to the doctors office with me (I hate pulling him out of school early). They have them at walmart they are like 20.00, I figured I would do a little research on them and it’s not like I can’t return it if it’s no good. I think I read on them that they can pick up in the 3rd trimester which I am at (30 weeks). So just wondering are they worth it?
Couldn’t find it on walmart.com here’s another link

FDA warns Avoid Fetal “Keepsake” Images, Heartbeat Monitors. Now am a little worried. How many U/S did u have?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
enjoying my newborn asked:

My u/s was for finding out how far along in pregnancy I was and I was considering in the future to find out the sex of my baby and possibly get the 3d/4d us. However, after reading the study below and the FDA warning I think I will just find out the sex of my child when he or she is born. We don’t do baby showers (so not knowing won’t affect anything) we actually do a shower after the baby is born and they have names so its almost like introducing them to society.

how many US did you have?

My grandmother distrusts ultrasounds because she said that the same argument was given for xrays during her time so she thinks its a matter of time before US will also be regulated/

Are Wireless Baby Monitors Any Good?

Monday, January 18th, 2010
Andyj00 asked:

There are two alternatives when it comes to choosing a baby monitor. A wireless or wired monitor and both have their pros and cons. There is always a lot of speculation as to whether wireless equipment is safe and reliable.

Wireless equipment is certainly safe and sound to have around your child as it simply uses same radio waves that are around all of us all of the time transmitting the latest songs from radios stations. And these obviously don’t harm us! The main different is the frequency that is transmitted is different.

With analog type baby monitors there is a slight chance of interference. But simply switch channels and all will be ok. These units are far more reliable than when they were a few years ago so you won’t have any problems. The big advantage of the analog units is that they are quite cheap to buy.

It you want an interference-free monitoring system then buy a digital (often known as DECT) baby monitoring solution. These use the same technology as a digital cordless phone - again, quite safe and we have these in our homes. These systems produce perfect crystal clear sound or images so that you can be confident of always being in contact with your baby.

If you want to actually see your baby whilst they are sleeping then go for a video baby monitor system. These systems have really come down in price in recent years and are affordable for all. It’s fantastic to be able to look at your baby as it will reduce anxiety and give you peace of mind.

Overall, wireless baby monitors out so much better than they were a few years ago and are far more affordable. They are safe and reliable and there is a great choice available.

Pigs to help us with diabetes

Friday, January 15th, 2010
Rishabh Bathla asked:

Pigs to help us with diabetes

Given the current practical limitations of glucose monitoring and insulin delivery systems, in addition to the current shortage of cadaveric organs, an alternative source of cells that can sense blood glucose levels and respond by releasing appropriate amounts of mature insulin must be identified to turn the promise of cellular therapy for diabetes into a reality for all those who would benefit.

Xenogeneic cells are a potential source of cells for transplantation therapy. Because pigs regulate glucose in a similar physiological range to that of humans, and because porcine insulin has been used as an exogenous source of insulin, pigs are generally considered the most promising donor animal. However, islets form xenogeneic pancreata are more immunogenic than allegoric islets.  Islets or islet precursors from porcine and bovine sources have been encapsulated in various biomaterials in order to reduce the immune rejection. Recently, pigs have been genetically engineered to lack a specific cell surface molecule that triggers hyperacute rejection due to preformed antibodies. However, there is experimental evidence that Gal is not the only epitope recognised by preformed xenoreactive antibodies. An additional concern with xenografted tissue is the transmission of infectious agents into humans.

Porcine endogenous retrovirus transmission has been a focus of several conflicting studies. Some studies report no transmission following transplantation of living porcine tissue into human patients and no evidence of transmission when porcine islets are co-incubated with permissive human stem cells in vitro. Contrary to these reports, porcine endogenous retrovirus transmission was frequently observed between cultured porcine endogenous retrovirus-producing porcine cells or specific pathogen-free porcine islets and human or mouse cells in vivo. Transmission of porcine cytomegalovirus and lymphotropic herpesvirus is also of concern.

Stem cells offer a potential solution to the opposed requirements of cell proliferation and function. In theory, these cells can proliferate in an undifferentiated state and then be converted to take on required metabolic functions through genetic and epigenetic manipulations. Stem cells have been isolated from embryonic tissues as well as a variety of fetal and adult sources, including umbilical cord blood, bone marrow, central nervous system, liver and pancreas. One potential advantage of adult stem cells is that they could be used for autologous transplantation.

Why you should have a lawyer, who is also a doctor, handle your cerebral palsy case

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Alice Shown asked:

There are thousands of attorneys who handle cerebral palsy cases. However, having an attorney who is also a doctor can be extremely advantageous to your case.

A doctor is trained and understands labor and delivery. When a child is born with cerebral palsy, there are usually problems with the child’s heart rate prior to birth. A trained doctor understands how fetal monitor tracings should read. They are aware of unreassuring patterns can lead to decreased oxygen and cerebral palsy. A lawyer who is also a doctor is aware of how attending physicians and nurse are to deal with birth related issues that can result in cerebral palsy. Unlike an ordinary attorney, a doctor/attorney knows the standard of care and can recognize when this has been breached. Doctors are knowledgeable in pediatrics, obstetrics, radiology, and neurology as well. They understand the normal developing fetus and how to recognize any complications that can lead to cerebral palsy.

A doctor/lawyer can “read between the lines” in your delivery and prenatal records which can help determine if your child’s cerebral palsy or developmental delay is as a result of medical malpractice.

The familiarity with the terminology and procedures recorded in your medical records means that a doctor/lawyer can tell if you have a case the same day that these records are reviewed.

You only have one chance when you proceed with a cerebral palsy case. Many families have hired attorneys who are not doctors and the results have been far less than satisfactory. However, there is documentation that shows how having a lawyer who is also a doctor can generate record verdicts on cerebral palsy cases.

Did anyone else not want ultrasound during pregnancy?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010
pennypincher asked:

If so, did you have a hard time finding a doctor who would go along with your wishes? Most doctors around here routinely use ultrasound, especially the doptone and the electronic fetal monitor.
With all four of my pregnancies, I always felt movement before the doctor ever heard the heartbeat. I never felt movement until about 20 weeks.
Some people consider the safety of ultrasound controversial and I did not want to take any chances. Also the electronic monitor has known risks.

Fetal Doppler 101

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
clinicalguard asked:

What is Fetal Doppler for?

A fetal Doppler is a kind of non-invasive medical apparatus used to check and measure the fetal heart rate (FHR) during expecting mothers’ gestation. Normally, a fetal Doppler uses a 3MHz or 2MHz probe to detect the fetal heart rate. The small device employs fetal diagnostic ultrasound to collect the fetal heartbeat signals and then converts the signal into fetal heart beat (embryocardia) that we can hear.

How many kinds of the Fetal Doppler probe are there?

There are two types of probe that are equipped with a fetal heart Doppler - 2MHz or 3MHz probes. While 3 MHz probe is more sensitive than 2MHz probe for most cases, 2MHz probe works better for overweight expecting mothers.

How many fetal heart monitoring devices are there?

Apart from the difference in probe frequency, the handheld fetal Dopplers can be divided into two types according to their functions, the regular one and the digital one. The only difference is that the digital Dopplers is equipped with an LCD screen displaying several parameters including FHR, probe type, battery indicator and different display modes altogether.

Besides, there are some other types of fetal heart monitoring devices, e.g. fetoscope, electronic fetal monitoring, telemetry monitoring, which belong to the fetal heartbeat detection big family.

What is FHR?

The normal range of fetal heart rate is between 120 - 180 BPM (Beats Per Minute). Generally, the fetal monitoring device produced by different manufacturers can detect the FHR range between 50 and 210BPM. But the readings of FHR may be fluctuated based on some reasons, for example, fetal movements.

How does the Fetal Doppler work?

The usage of the small device is very easy and simple. The handheld design allows users to hold the unit comfortably while checking unborn baby’s FHR. The best gesture for expecting mothers is to lie down and expose their abdomen. A certain amount of ultrasound gel is imperative for the FHR check. The important function of ultrasound gel is to reduce static that may be caused during the course of using a fetal Doppler. The fetal heart beat can be detected for as early as 8-12 weeks of pregnant women. Users can slowly adjust the angle of the probe when searching for the fetal heart beat. Users should be patient and careful when doing the exam. Since there is no evidence of harmful effects on expecting mothers by any scientific research and experiments, it should be safe to use ultrasonic Dopplers for expecting mothers and health care professionals to listen to baby’s heartbeat. And we recommend that each examination time should not exceed 10 minutes. If you have more questions or need further assistance when using this little device, please contact your health care provider for more help.
