How do I convince the Doc to induce me?

Friday, February 19th, 2010
lucyr2xoxo asked:

I developed a major itching last week over my entire body, and found out that I have a condition called chloatisis, my doctor prescribed Urso for me which has helped a little bit, I have heard that it is dangerous to the baby and can result in the baby being stillborn. I had to go to the hospital today for fetal monitoring and when they called my Ob/gyn to let him know that things were okay on the monitor and to see if he wanted me to come in again next week, my doctor told the nurse that if the medication is working then they will not induce me as he had previously told me. I will be 38 weeks pregnant on thursday and I am very worried about this condition, how can I convince my doctor that I want to be induced? Not only is the stress of worrying about this driving me crazy, so is the itching and lack of sleep its causing. Thank you.

Asthma During Pregnancy

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
James Pendergraft asked:

Asthma is one of the common ailments that pregnant women experience. This is the problem to those who already have the condition as well as to those who have not experienced it before. There are many factors that can trigger asthma attacks such as inhalation of plant pollens, dust, and even stress.

Asthma during pregnancy is a very dangerous situation because the disease has the potential to cut back the oxygen supply for the body and for the baby. However, if one is able to keep asthma under control, there is a great chance that one will have a safe delivery. But it is important that one should be able to keep asthma under control.

Asthma Complications During Pregnancy

The problem with asthma is that sometimes most people usually neglect a condition that may foretell the occurrence of asthma. As such, shortness of breath and wheezing during pregnancy are sometimes ignored with the woman unaware that it is already a sign of asthma. An uncontrolled asthma poses the following risks to a pregnant woman:

1)One common complication from asthma is having labor that does not occur naturally. This may be induced or started by the doctor to avoid having complications during natural labor while under asthma attack. Nonetheless, despite the fact that the procedure is known to save a woman from complications, the procedure itself is complicated and brings with it a lot of risks.

2)A woman may suffer from vomiting that is more than in normal cases especially during the early parts of pregnancy.

3)A pregnant woman may suffer from high blood pressure as a complication arising from asthma. In turn, high blood pressure may cause various other complications that can put the pregnancy to a severe test.

4)Another complication that a pregnant woman may suffer from is pre-eclampsia. This condition can cause kidney and liver problems and can potentially affect the brain.

On the other hand, the asthma complications to the baby include the following:

1)There is the possible death of the baby immediately before or after birth due to either lack of oxygen supply or other abnormalities related to asthma.

2)There is an abnormal growth of the fetus due to retardation. As a result, the baby has a low birth weight and appears small at birth.

3)There is also the risk of preterm birth or birth occurring before the 37th week of pregnancy.

Measures to Be Undertaken for Asthma During Pregnancy

The main mode of treatment for asthma during pregnancy is to monitor the lung function all throughout the period of pregnancy. This is to make sure that the fetus will get enough supply of oxygen and retardation of its growth will be avoided. To monitor lung function, a doctor uses a peak flow meter to measure the amount of air that enters the lungs.

One must avoid known asthma triggers such as tobacco smoke, dust, and other pollutants. Ultrasound after the 32nd week of pregnancy is also important to monitor fetal growth.

Baby Monitors – Why They Are Useful

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
Andyj00 asked:

When you bring your newborn home for the first time it is a fantastic and exciting experience. But as the days and weeks go on, you will soon find that you need a little time to yourself. This time could be for doing household chores, watching TV or simply having a hard earned rest.

When your baby is asleep you have the ideal time to do these things but you are just a little anxious about leaving them on their own in their bedroom. Naturally, you want to look over them and make sure they are ok. This is where a baby monitor is extremely useful as it gives you the freedom to go about your daily activities without worrying about your little one.

When your little one falls asleep, you can put your little bundle of joy straight down into their own bed and have a baby monitor watch over them. Baby monitors work by placing a transmitting unit next to your baby and a receiving unit kept close to you. The unit next to your baby will transmit audio and even video pictures to the parent unit. So you can always be assured that you will know when your baby needs attention.

For real peace of mind there are baby movement monitors that send an alarm if your baby hasn’t moved or hasn’t been breathing for a few seconds. You can be confident that the device will inform you as soon as it needs to so you can investigate the issue.

Virtually all baby monitors are wireless which means there are no wires or cables used at all. This gives you the freedom to roam around your home and yard knowing that you can always hear or see your baby.

Fetal Brain Injury

Sunday, February 7th, 2010
Evan Langsted asked:

Many injuries to newborns are avoidable.  Permanent brain damage caused by fetal distress is often caused by tragic errors and mistakes by the obstetrical team.  Injury to the newborn baby’s brain is many times due to failing to properly manage the labor and delivery, leading to cerebral palsy.

The following is a list of possible medical errors that can lead to fetal brain injury:

Failure to respond to umbilical cord compression

Failure to respond to fetal distress and fetal monitoring sensors

Failure to respond to the need for a cesarean section in a timely manner

Misuse of forceps

Misuse of extractor

The alert obstetrician will observe potential problems and immediately take the proper steps before brain injury can occur. Physician delay or inaction in making decisions can cause irreparable harm to the newborn baby.

Lack of Oxygen

Fetal brain injury and Cerebral palsy are often the result of lack of oxygen to the brain of the fetus during the birthing process.  Lack of oxygen can have a devastating effect on the fetus prior to birth.  Some explanations for this event occurring are umbilical cord prolapse, an unusual position of the baby in the birth canal, dysfunctional labor (one that is too long or the contractions are too strong).  The use of Pitocin can also have a tragic effect on the fetus by causing unnatural contractions which limit the amount of oxygen to the baby causing devastating brain damage.

The condition of the baby right after birth can alert the parents and the obstetrical team to the fact that the infant has indeed suffered a brain injury.  However, fetal brain injury is not always apparent immediately after the birth.  The brain injury may not become apparent for weeks, months or years after when the child fails to meet developmental milestones during this time.

Lack of oxygen at birth can be avoided by good obstetrical and neonatal care.  You may want to investigate what happened to your baby and whether his/her injury could have been prevented.

More questions about fetal heart monitors?

Saturday, February 6th, 2010
KC asked:

So I finally got my monitor and it really is easy to use. It was much easier find her heartbeat as well.

But I have some more questions for the ladies who have used them.

I swear it’s like she knows what I’m doing. I’ll hear it for about 5-10 seconds and then it’s like she moves away. So I have to go searching to find it again. Has this happened to anyone else? The heart rate also goes from 147 to 155 and back down during this period. Is that normal?

I also noticed that when I have it in the same place I’ll get a crackling like sound or one that sounds like a record scratching. Could this be from her moving around? I can’t feel her moving when it happens but that’s the only thing I can think of too explain it.

Smoking During Pregnancy: Risks to the Pregnancy and Harm to the Baby

Thursday, February 4th, 2010
James W. Brann, MD FACOG asked:

Smoking during pregnancy is one of the worst things you can do. When you smoke, your baby smokes too. There about 600 ingredients in cigarettes, and when a cigarette is burned, it releases over 4,000 chemicals. Many of these are poisons, and at least 50 of these chemicals cause cancer. So when you take a puff, your growing baby gets exposed to these harmful pollutants too. Because your baby is developing inside you, exposure to these pollutants can be very detrimental to his overall health and the safety of your pregnancy.

The nicotine and tar in your cigarette decreases the level of oxygen and nutrients that your baby receives. This can slow down your baby’s growth and development, and it puts you at risk for miscarriage and stillbirths (a baby with no heartbeat).

Luckily, if you quit smoking immediately, your baby’s growth will return to normal shortly.

Smoking during pregnancy has been associated with 5 percent of infant deaths, 10 percent of preterm births, and 30 percent in low birth weight babies. Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke can also increase:

Infertility—When compared to women who don’t smoke, smokers have a 30 percent increased risk of being infertile. They also experience a delay in conception—i.e. it’s harder to get pregnant when you smoke. Placental Abruption—A serious and dangerous complication that can occur during the third trimester of pregnancy. It occurs when your placenta separates from your uterine lining. Placental abruption can cause vaginal bleeding, resulting in fetal distress, uterine tenderness, and increased frequency of contractions. Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PRROM)—Your water breaks early, before the onset of real labor. Placenta Previa—Your placenta grows in the lowest part of the uterus, which can cause problems for the baby. You may bleed and require prompt care. Some women are even hospitalized.

It is estimated that over 20 percent of American women in their childbearing years smoke cigarettes, despite knowing its harmful effects. In 2005, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey reported that 14 percent of women smoke during pregnancy.

Babies who are born to women who smoked during pregnancy are also at an increased risk of having a cleft lip or cleft palate. A cleft palate occurs when there is a split in the baby’s lip and the roof of his/her mouth, creating a hole between the nose and mouth. Surgery is often used to reconstruct that part of the baby’s face.

The danger of smoke doesn’t end when your baby is born. Being around smoke can also put your newborn baby at risk.

When exposed to secondhand smoke, babies have an increased risk of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). As they grow, your child is at an increased risk of developing asthma, respiratory problems, ear infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis.

Because the babies of smokers tend to be premature and have low birth weights, they are also at an increased risk of serious lifelong health problems, such as mental retardation, learning problems, and cerebral palsy.  These babies are also more likely to have birth defects, including congenital heart defects.

The more you smoke during pregnancy, the more harm it will do to your baby. It is very important to try to quit smoking. Even if you can’t kick the habit completely, try to limit your daily cigarette intake.

Make an appointment to talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about your desire to quit smoking. They can refer you to a smoking cessation program and offer other ways to help you quit.

Remember to surround yourself in a positive environment. You are more likely to succeed if you have the support of friends and family who understand the harmful effects of smoking.

I need to get a(baby) incubator/isolette & get it across Can. / US/Mexican border to a sm. hospital?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
pinkrhodos asked:

Our church visits a small town twice a year. I have worked in the small hospital there but we mainly work with the migrant people . We build houses, take supplies, food, clothes, blankets, medicine etc. I just received an email from one of the resident misssionaries who said that a baby had just died because there was no incubator for him. This little hospital survives on donations of supplies and equipment from where ever people can get it from. I know they still need a fetal monitor and now another incubator. The radiant warmer they had was one of the first ones ever made and their OR looks like it is out of the 1960’s. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

A Glimpse into Cerebral Palsy

Monday, February 1st, 2010
Percy Santiago asked:

One of the most prevalent yet enigmatic abnormalities known in the medical world today is cerebral palsy, but hoping to get a glimpse into cerebral palsy will help people understand why it happens and what can be done to deal with it.

Cerebral paralysis is also known as CP for short. The condition was found by the Brit surgeon named William tiny in 1860. His discovery led straight to the study and formulation of hypotheses regarding asphyxia at birth as the main cause of the issue.

But it was only in 1897 that famed psychoanalyst and now the daddy of Psychology Sigmund Freud pushed for the idea that a tricky birthing is not the true reason for cerebral paralysis. Then a neurologist, Freud asserted that the problem may have been a symptom and an effect of a far more complicated problem on fetal development. He was right and the condition is one of the results of what’s called cerebral palsy.

But regardless of the years of study and the continuing debate on the subject, nobody still know even now what exactly causes cerebral palsy. Nothing is ever certain when it comes to this problem. This is in spite of the fact that a lot of findings point fingers to Problems caused by a lack of oxygen during fetal development. Some also include exposure to radiation, internal infection during pregnancy, trauma in the brain during birth and delivery as some of the other factors behind cerebral palsy.

However, these are only some of the causes but are not always the main and primary reasons for cerebral palsy. No less than half of all children born prematurely are thought to develop cerebral palsy upon their delivery. Medical gurus believe that premature infants are vulnerable to cerebral palsy, in part because their organs have not yet totally developed when they were born, so raising the risk of hypoxic injury because of the lack of oxygen circulation to the brain that’s principally in charge of those studied with cerebral palsy.

There are basically 3 common sorts of cerebral palsy, first is the spastic where somebody with spastic cerebral palsy does not have the capacity to chill their muscles or could be stiff.Next is athetoid, for which those with this kind of cerebral palsy affects the patient’s capability to control their muscles, which is usually characterized by the patient’s hands and feet fluttering uncontrollably.

And the one with ataxic cerebral palsy has Problems with balance and coordination.Cerebral palsy ranges from mild to severe cases, that may be characterized by the amount or degree of brain trauma or damage of the patient , however , is not sometimes conclusive about the reason for cerebral palsy.

Neurologists are the first specialists that deal with patients afflicted with cerebral palsy, thru which patients are ordinarily diagnosed as having the analysis and appraisal of the patient’s nervous system. For young patients, especially for children with cerebral palsy, they are most typically treated by pediatric neurologists.

Treatment for young patients with cerebral palsy might also undergo healing treatment by a pediatric orthopedist who will be in charge of handling Problems with bones and joints. This is followed up with treatment from a developmental pediatrician, who usually monitors how young cerebral palsy patients through their developmental stage and by a pediatric physiatrist who treats children with disabilities.

So basically this is a good glimpse into cerebral palsy that may provide us with key and important info regarding cerebral palsy and how to better understand it.
