      Those monitors are very tricky to use- you actually cannot really pick up the fetal tones until the last trimester unless you are lucky. Most likely what you are hearing is your own heartbeat. The fetal beat sounds like a whoosh- not a thump and the instruments used by the Dr to hear it early on are much more powerful than those you purchase at babies R Us. If you are not surem, then take a test. Good luck.
